Boxwood & Brass wind sextet play Beethoven and Mozart – 3 August

Boxwood & Brass

Boxwood & Brass

Beethoven : Sextet in E flat, Op.71
Mozart : Arias from Le Nozze di Figaro (arr. Stumpf & Sartorius)
Beethoven : Septet in E flat, Op.21 (arr. Czerny)

Boxwood & Brass combine musical virtuosity with active research into the rich resource of music written or arranged for the ‘Harmonie’ wind bands which enjoyed enormous popularity in the Classical and early Romantic periods. The usual ensemble was a sextet (pairs of clarinets, horns and bassoons), and their repertoire included arrangements of opera, instrumental music and chamber music, as well as works written specifically for this combination such as the Beethoven Sextet. His immensely popular Septet for wind and strings was arranged for wind sextet by his pupil, Czerny. Mozart himself was delighted to hear his opera arias played by a Harmonie outside his window.
